The Northgate development is part of the wider One City Plan which will contribute to a reinvigorated city centre as part of a co-ordinated delivery strategy. The site, which is alongside Chester Town Hall and next to the proposed new theatre and library, is reserved for significant new retail development, along with leisure uses and a new market.
THE NEW PROPOSALS
The 2015 Chester Northgate proposals have been updated from the 2012/13 concept scheme in response to current commercial needs, the requirements of retailers and the opportunity to create a better scheme for Chester. In particular, the site of the existing Crowne Plaza hotel has now been included in the new proposals and residential apartments have also been added to the mix of uses.
Aimed at restoring Chester as one of the UK’s Top 50 shopping and leisure destinations, Chester Northgate will transform the northwest quarter of the city centre by delivering a department store along with a mix of large and small shops; a multi-screen cinema; Cafés, bars and restaurants; a new, reinvigorated market hall; a new hotel with conference facilities; parking for around 800 cars; new bus stops on St. Martin’s Way; over 1,000 new jobs.
Chester Northgate is not a new shopping centre: it is a development of open shopping streets, parades and squares that will integrate samlessly with the surrounding parts of the city centre.
